Somewhere in the back of our minds and the deepest depths of our hearts lies a desire, a passion for something so wonderful it can only be fulfilled by pure fantasy. Fantasies that make the ordinary extraordinary, that allow for everyday miracles to happen. Miracles like hope, laughter and Edith Piaf.
Rebecca Morton captured the audience even before she set her high heeled foot on stage. Embracing the very spirit of great songstresses of the past, Morton was impossible to resist – a sequined dress and flash of fishnet stockings inspired images from the roaring twenties, where flapper girls ruled and music was religion.
Yet behind this flash and glamour was Morton's tale of love, loss, despair, romance and second chances. The soundtrack to her pain, her joy and everything in between is a delight to listen to, the experienced performer's voice is both strong and capable of handling the varied and challenging score of Judy Garland, Joni Mitchell and of course Miss Piaf. Accompanied by Trevor Jones on piano, he kept pace with Morton and as always never missed a beat, a note or a chance for brilliance.
Both cute and quirky, there is something intrinsically likable about Morton, who gives each performance everything she's got and then some. Whether washing dishes or singing in a Parisian café, Morton is effortlessly glamorous and at her finest when singing in French. Conjuring up images of cobbled streets and stylish cocktail bars, Morton gave the audience a little piece of Paris on a chilly Melbourne evening.
